The Most Amazing Hamburger

Ok.

Tonight we had the most amazing meal.  Thank you Iowa Girl Eats for this fantastic recipe.

Stuffed French Onion Soup Cheddar Cheese Sliders.  (I used Cheddar cheese instead of Fontina cheese because it was on sale and to tell you the truth, I couldn’t find Fontina in the regular cheese isle and was in too much of a hurry to run all the way back to the fancy cheese isle – you know, next to the deli)

Did you get all that?

On a scale of 1 – 10, this slider is a 11 – and is the best homemade hamburger I’ve ever had.

DELICIOSO

So, skip going to the restaurant where you will spend $15 on a meal that won’t carry half the savory flavor as these sliders.  Plus these are homemade which immediately makes them healthier.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 jumbo sweet onion
  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2oz cheddar cheese
  • 1lb lean ground beef
  • 2 Tablespoons (1/2 packet) Onion Soup & Dip Mix
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 8 tea or cocktail rolls, or any small bun
Cut your onion in half, then slice thin.

Melt butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat (5 out of 10.) Add onions and toss to coat. Cook for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft and golden brown. Turn heat down during the cooking process if onions begin to burn. *Make sure to enjoy this savory smell – sweet, sweet caramelized onions.  It’s the BEST!

Meanwhile, cut cheddar cheese (or fontina) into 8 cubes.

In a large bowl, combine ground beef with onion soup & dip mix and water, then form into 8 balls.

Push your thumb into the balls to create an indentation, then stuff with a cheese cube. Seal tightly, then flatten slightly into a patty. Repeat with remaining cheese and ground beef.

Heat grill to medium-high, then grill sliders for 5-6 minutes a side. Remove to a plate, cover with foil, then let rest for 5 minutes.  *To prevent cheese from leaking out of the sliders while grilling, seal the beef tightly around the cheese, and cook them low and slow. Resist the urge to grill over super hot flame.  This will cause cheese to bubble and burst out.

Toast buns briefly on the grill, then top sliders with caramelized onions and serve.

Like my husband says, “It doesn’t need any ketchup – that would just ruin it.”  Serve these babies up as is – and they will be perfect.

We served our sliders with a crisp, green salad.

Happy grilling!
